Painting the Nightmare

May 2008·p. 95

THE SHORT VERSION

The Nightmare’s skull moves from shaded brown through warm earth tones into ivory and fine white edges. Small painted chips interrupt the smooth bone, while Mannfred’s back spikes use a related earth-colour sequence with darkened tips. The creature’s exposed flesh starts from a Foundation brown and builds towards bone-white highlights, with a darker glaze restoring the recesses. Similar colours therefore distinguish skeletal, horn-like and leathery textures through different handling.
