INTERVIEW·WHITE DWARF 340

Images of Warhammer

April 2008·pp. 54–55

THE SHORT VERSION

John Blanche recalls freelance work, joining Citadel and illustrating early Warhammer alongside Tony Ackland while Rick Priestley assembled the rules by hand. He explains the Northern European influences that helped the game develop a dark identity distinct from more conventional high fantasy. Renaissance art, particularly Altdorfer’s Battle of Issus, remains an inspiration. The original and renewed Harry the Hammer images show that continuity, though Blanche reserves his greatest enthusiasm for the next project.
