Griffon: Painting the Feathers

January 2008·p. 92

THE SHORT VERSION

Alternating dark brown and off-white bands establish Stormwing’s wings and upper body. Separate shading washes deepen each band before progressively lighter drybrushing picks out the sculpted feather texture. The amount of paint decreases with each pass, leaving the earlier tones visible and reserving the brightest treatment for the light feathers. The method creates strong patterned contrast without requiring every feather to be individually blended.
