PAINTING·WHITE DWARF 336

Painting the Phoenix Shield

December 2007·p. 98

THE SHORT VERSION

A deep blue field fades towards black behind the sculpted phoenix. Separate red wings, pale plumage and warm flames develop through washes and fine highlights, while small blue-white stars enliven the background. The sequence gives the conspicuous shield attention comparable to the Dragon itself, turning a small heraldic element into another focal point in the finished composition.
