Standard Bearer: Tolkien and the Shape of the Hobby
January 2007·pp. 60–62
THE SHORT VERSION
Jervis Johnson recalls converting historical soldiers into Orcs and the Grey Company after reading Tolkien as a teenager, long before suitable miniatures existed. Those improvised games taught him to value a hobby that players can adapt to their own interests. He sees the modern Lord of the Rings range, narrative supplements and Legions of Middle-earth as different entrances to that same flexibility, supporting collectors, campaign players and competitive generals.
