BATTLE REPORT·WHITE DWARF 300

Dead by Dawn

December 2004·pp. 118–135

THE SHORT VERSION

Graham McNeill’s fifteen-hundred-point Ultramarines spring a dawn ambush on Pete Haines’s infantry-heavy Orks, testing the new Space Marine codex against a horde protected by kustom force fields. Graham concentrates both arriving waves on one flank and uses Tigurius’s command group to hold up several mobs while the firing line destroys the nearest threats.

The Orks eventually overwhelm Tigurius and remove important vehicles with rokkits, but their delay leaves too little time to reach the remaining Marines. Casualty points are almost equal; the mission’s additional reward for surviving scoring units turns the result into a solid Ultramarines victory and makes force preservation decisive.
