A Time to Reflect…

December 2003·p. 2

THE SHORT VERSION

Paul Sawyer sets aside the usual celebration of his job to mark the death of Steve Hambrook. Jervis Johnson’s accompanying tribute recalls a friend and colleague whose editing work supported the Citadel Journal and several Specialist Games magazines. Together the pieces describe the personal loss felt by the studio and its readers, while directing contemporary condolences to Hambrook’s family.

The editorial uses modelling, painting, gaming and reading as the four pillars that support the hobby. It introduces the issue through concrete examples of each, from converted Knights and Battlemages to Speed Freek painting, a vehicle-heavy battle and the concluding instalment of the Chronicles of Bain.

Paragons of Honour

The editors introduce an issue devoted to Imperial and Chaos Knights and the new Iron Warriors releases, including the redesigned Defiler. They also explain the decision to publish Jamie Farquhar’s Iron Warriors collection as a tribute following his death in 2024: his conversions had already appeared throughout the magazine’s Arks of Omen storyline, but his whole army had never received its own feature.

Operation Skirmish

The editorial makes small encounters the organising theme of the issue: not every Warhammer story needs armies and a planetary invasion. Blood Bowl, Kill Team, Necromunda, Warhammer Quest and Space Marine Operations provide different ways of concentrating attention on a handful of characters, alongside inspiration for collecting their models.
