The Chronicles of Bain, Part 2: The Hole

February 2026·pp. 102–111

THE SHORT VERSION

A demolition task on Ancar Majoris traps Elias Bain beneath a collapsed drilling machine when an ammunition stockpile conceals promethium bombs. His damaged augmetic hand helps him wrest a rifle from an equally trapped ork, but the broken stairs, freezing quarry and dead vox leave him without an escape. As hunger and isolation erode his faith, he survives by eating the corpse of the enemy he killed.

Renewed Imperial bombardment eventually shifts the wreckage far enough for Bain to climb out. Rescue brings no easy restoration: the Callous Jacks left the world sixty days earlier, and after examination he returns to them cleared of alien taint yet profoundly changed. The story treats survival as a lasting psychological wound rather than another uncomplicated heroic exploit.
