Grombrindal: Ancestor’s Burden — Durkar’s Wake

April 2023·pp. 132–141

THE SHORT VERSION

Subcouncillor Anki Thayne investigates why Guildmaster Durkar left his estate to the human gardener Sivarn Trell. An open enquiry becomes a wake, then a struggle over inheritance as Riggen Bolk presents an ancestral axe and Myrddi Wutten claims ties to lost Karak Thorga. Thayne’s research confirms the karak’s connection to Durkar, but Rigo exposes the young claimants’ improvised story and magical spying.

The white-bearded stranger also reveals that Bolk stole Durkar’s weapon and poisoned his ale, turning a carefully staged bid for legitimacy into a murder accusation. Trell’s furious magic confirms the depth of his friendship with the dead duardin. Thayne directs Durkar’s wealth towards war orphans, while Rigo sends Trell and Myrddi to find Shima Sjarsdottir and undertake the unfinished journey to Thorga.
